The Magic of Rotary & the Food4Kids Guelph story Terrie Jarvis Sep. 20, 2024 12:15 p.m.

THE MAGIC OF ROTARY happens when Rotarians become aware of a problem and pull together to make a positive difference. Such was the case in mid-2017 when local Rotarians learned that around 5% of school children in our own community risked going hungry on weekends, in families struggling to make ends meet. In Guelph?? We were shocked. Research quickly identified that many children depend on getting free food at school Monday to Friday but often struggle with insufficent food on weekends. Finding that no organization in Guelph was addressing this weekend food gap, the four Rotary Clubs in Guelph pulled together to find and build a solution. By early 2018, a weekend food bag program was launched. It started small, supporting 43 kids at 3 schools. Each year since, the FOOD4KIDS GUELPH program has grown and grown until today the program is now supporting 500 children at 31 elementary schools, year-round. On July 1st, 2024, this Rotary-inspired food program was handed over to the esteemed Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington. Under their umbrella, the program will keep going and growing under its new name, KEEP KIDS FED AT HOME. Come and hear how THE MAGIC OF ROTARY made all this possible.

Jennifer Foster, CEO of KidsAbility The Magic of Rotary and KidsAbility Dec. 06, 2024 12:15 p.m.

KidsAbility is one more example of “The Magic of Rotary”. It was founded by Rotary in 1957 to deliver pediatric services to children with special needs. Today, with centres located in Waterloo, Kitchener, Guelph, Cambridge and Fergus, KidsAbility supports over 17,000 children and youth (from birth to age 21) each year to reach their communication, social, physical and behavioural goals.

Join us to hear Jennifer Foster, CEO of KidsAbility since January 2024, provide an update about KidsAbility and Rotary’s continued support.

The Magic of Rotary and Shelldale Family Gateway
Michele Richardson & Diana Boal The Magic of Rotary and Shelldale Family Gateway Jan. 24, 2025 12:15 p.m.

Guelph's fantastic Shelldale Family Gateway might not have been established over 30 years ago without The Magic of Rotary and the involvement of our late, great Rotarian Charlie Whittaker - a former club president and district governor. Today, Shelldale continues to provide resources and tools to build a community of healthy children, healthy families, and a healthy neighbourhood in the Onward Willow community - an area of high need and diversity. At this meeting, our member Michele Richardson, Charlie Whittaker's daughter, will recall the beginnings of Shelldale and the key roles played by her father Charlie and mother Margaret.  Diana Boal, the current Executive Director of Shelldale will provide a short update on current activities at Shelldale including becoming one of the Grove Hub locations (another Rotary connection). Finally, our club will provide "Service Above Self" recognition to two long-term volunteers from the Shelldale Breakfast program:  a senior volunteer Dan (88, who is a recipient of the Charlie Whittaker Lifetime Achievement Award, and is beloved stepdad of Dianne Dance and partner of our retired Rotary member Anne Dance); and a junior volunteer Avery (13, who is Dan's protégé in the kitchen for the past 4 years already). We look forward to your presence at this celebration!

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 23, 1905
After setting up his law practice in Chicago, Paul P. Harris gathered several business associates to discuss the idea of forming an organization for local professionals. On 23 February 1905 Harris,  Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting.  Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.  Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF GUELPH BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 23, 1920

On February 23, 1920, 25 Guelph businessmen held an organizational meeting to form a new Rotary Club. Under the leadership of Alex Stewart (a Guelph pharmacist), the club was officially chartered on April 9, 1920 at the Royal Canadian Cafe. Over the years, the RCOG met at different locations for the weekly meetings. Moves from one location to another were usually prompted by changes in membership numbers.

The RCOG went on to sponsor the following nine clubs:
  • Kitchener, 1922
  • Orangeville, 1936
  • Acton, 1947
  • Drayton, 1950
  • Georgetown, 1955
  • Fergus, 1966
  • Guelph Wellington, 1986
  • Guelph Trillium, 1995
  • Guelph South, 2003
