OUR GUEST SPEAKER ON MARCH 14, 2025

We were truly privileged to have Robin Smart as our informative and entertaining speaker last Friday. She is the Public Education Coordinator from the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington-Guelph Office. Her talk was about "What is dementia? What should I know?" and she homed-in on several must-know basics, including:
  • The difference between forgetfulness and dementia.
  • The main types of dementia.
  • 10 warning signs of dementia.
  • 12 actions in life that can reduce the risk of developing dementia.
  • Sound advice for caregivers to let dementia behaviour go, or work around it, UNLESS the behaviour is Dangerous, Illegal or Immoral - three key words well worth remembering.
  • The importance of slowing down and only communicating one idea per sentence.
  • A reminder that emotions remain intact in people living with dementia, making it important for caregivers to remain calm and patient in interactions, and being especially mindful of voice tone and body language. "Good dementia care = Good emotional care."
Robin left us with a variety of useful materials that can also be found on the website at www.alzheimerww.ca.
