An invitation to join SCAN!
Young people are calling on governments to act decisively on the climate emergency. As seniors we must support their lead, amplify their voices and add our own to the growing movement for climate action. Join other seniors in Guelph to help figure out how we can collectively make a difference.

The two guest speakers (both retired educators) at our club meeting on October 4, 2024 represented the small, newish chapter of SCAN! Guelph.

Their message resonated with many of us in the room who have children and grandchildren, and our worries about how climate change is impacting the world they will inherit from us. They touched our inner sense of genuinely wanting to "do something" to make a positive difference about this existential climate threat, but not knowing where to even begin as individuals.

They extended a gentle invitation to attend the monthly meetings of SCAN! Guelph to meet and chat with like-minded seniors. This alone would demonstrate to young people that we care  about their future world, and along the way, who knows ... perhaps we will find ways where our collective voices could make a difference. Seniors are a large and important voting demographic, after all!

SCAN! Guelph meets regularly on the fourth Thursday of every month. All are welcome.
  • The next meeting is Thursday, October 24, 2024 at 2pm.
  • Location is to be decided - any suggestions for where this group can meet for free with room for about 25 people?
  • If you would like to attend, email them at guelph@seniorsforclimateactionnow.org

Sensory-friendly trick-or-treating at KidsAbility
KidsAbility is preparing for a “sensory friendly trick-or-treating” event for young clients and their families, designed for all levels of ability. They are seeking 8-16 Rotary volunteers to assist at the Guelph location (503 Imperial Road N.) on October 29th. Rotary Clubs are also being asked to donate $250 to help with the purchase of treats.

  • This is the first time such an event is being organized by KidsAbility
  • Date at KidsAbility Guelph:  Tuesday, October 29th, 2024
  • Time:
    • Trick-or-treaters and their families – visiting between 4pm and 7pm
    • Rotary volunteers – from 3:30pm to 7:30pm, from setup to take-down - either 8 volunteers for 4 hours each, or 16 volunteers for 2 hours each, to be confirmed with individual volunteers
  • Each Rotary volunteer will be paired with a KidsAbility staff member in each of the 8 rooms to be set up for this event inside the building
  • KidsAbility employees will be decorating the premises, preparing for all levels of ability, and they will be on hand to warmly guide and encourage visitors
  • At each decorated door, visiting kids will have the chance to practise their door knocking and announce “Trick or treat!” (a good rehearsal for those planning for neighbourhood trick-or-treating on October 31st)
  • If door knocking and calling out is not possible (e.g. for non-verbal kids), they will have the option of pressing a speak-button or using a picture to indicate they are engaged
  • At the 8 doors, kids will receive a treat – either edible or non-edible, depending on their needs/caregiver preferences
  • A quiet, calming space will also be set aside for kids who might become a bit overwhelmed during the event
