On September 29th, The Indigenous Awareness Committee updated the club on projects that they had been working on throughout the year.
They began with the film festival that they ran throughout the month of June (Indigenous History Month) showing the films Twice Colonized, Bones of Crows, Our People Will be Healed and Falls around her.
This was followed up by a screening of Bones of Crows on September 23rd in advance of National Truth and Reconciliation day.
The committee (led by Gisella Gazzola) arranged the creation of a mural (featured above) at the grove hub in Fergus which was created and led by an indigenous artist and brought to life children and youth at the Grove Hub.
During Lunch we screened a chapter of the film “94 Calls to Action and Signs of Hope." Following the film, Eleni discussed the film and how the 94 calls to action are organized and provided context around them.
Eleni then shared a personal story about her relationship with indigenous peoples and opened the mic up for others to share. Marva, Roger, Nanita and Crista shared their personal stories. To finish off the meeting Rick Shared a teaching from his experience at sweat lodge. The phrase that you say when entering sweat lodge means “all my relations”. Although he originally thought this phrase meant all of this family that he is related to (mother, father, children Grandfather etc…) he was later taught by and Elder that “all my relations” meant all living things on Earth. With Mother Earth connecting us all.
