International Women's Day
March 8th is International Women's Day. This year, Rotary International is proud to have its first ever female President, Jennifer Jones from Canada. It's strange to think that Rotary prevented women from joining until the Supreme Court of the USA forced Rotary to change course in 1987. You might be interested to read some of this history HERE.
What a remarkable and informative presentation by volunteer Lynn Bestari. She started with the history of the site, beginning as the Ontario Reformatory and later becoming the Guelph Correctional Centre. It was designed as a model of social reform, allowing inmates to learn trades and upgrade their schooling. Today, the physical site is still owned by the Province of Ontario and there is a strong movement to have it recognized as a National Urban Park. This would keep the beautiful grounds available for the public to enjoy, while also being used for research and educational purposes already in place.
