OUR SPEAKER ON APRIL 4, 2025:
DR. PATTI GALVIN
We had another awesome speaker this week.
Dr. Patty Galvin, a sports medicine specialist and physician for athletes at the University of Guelph, shared her career experiences and insights into working with elite athletes, particularly in hockey. The meeting also addressed topics such as player health and safety in sports, challenges faced by athletes, and concluded with discussions on current issues.
Dr. Galvin outlined her life and professional experiences, starting from her youth in Northern Manitoba and playing hockey there, to her later studies at the Universities of Waterloo, Guelph and McMaster, and completing her medical residency in Hamilton. Her specialization in sports medicine allowed her to combine her lifelong passion for sport with her medical craft, and led to many amazing experiences as a team physician for a wide range of sports, within Canada and internationally.
Dr. Galvin has served as a team physician for Canada's National Womens' Hockey Team (2006-2010), Canadian Amputee Hockey Team attending World Championships and Olympic competitions. She continues to work as a team physician for the University of Guelph Varsity Football and Hockey teams, as well as providing coverage for LPGA and triathlon events.
It was interesting to hear her observations on the characteristics and experiences of elite athletes, and the sacrifices made by them and their families in pursuit of their sport. She shared several anecdotes, emphasizing that her role is always about Safety First.
Dr. Galvin was introduced by Paul Dredge, and later thanked by Terrie Jarvis.
