IMPORTANT CALENDAR UPDATES!

The month of June 2023 is looking great for our club. Please update your calendars and personal plans ... and join us!

June 2nd ... Will be our annual club picnic at Riverside Park, rain or shine. Bring your own lunch and beverage and join us at the large, red-roof picnic shelter for an hour or two of Rotary fellowship. There are several picnic tables in the shelter but bring your own chair if that would be more comfortable. No signup is required - just come. Friends and family are welcome!

June 9th ... Will be at the ICC. There will be a long-awaited celebration and presentation, not to be missed. The club's Charitable Foundation (RGC Fund) will be making a large donation to The Grove Hubs capital fund. Afterwards, an informative  presentation will provide an overview of this amazing Rotary-inspired initiative that today makes such a big difference to youth in Wellington County and Guelph. It's the perfect time to bring a friend to see the power of Rotary in action. Sign up HERE for June 9th.

June 16th ... Will be at the ICC. The program will be in two parts. After an interesting presentation about the Guelph Hiking Trail Club, the second half of the program will be a review and wrap up of this Rotary year 2022-2023 by outgoing Club President Andrew Johnson. He will be handing over the reins to incoming Club President Nanita Mohan for Rotary year 2023-2024. Sign up HERE for June 16th

PLEASE NOTE - the previously announced club gathering on June 22nd at the home of Faz Ashkar will not be taking place.

June 23rd ... Will be at the ICC. The special program will be in celebration of
National Indigenous People's Day (officially marked by Canada on June 21st each year). There will be a presentation by Gil Stelter, retired professor from the University of Guelph Department of History, telling us about Indigenous History in Guelph. We'll also get to meet this year's Indigenous Youth Award recipient honoured by our Indigenous Awareness Committee, and there will be a special lunch with delicious Indigenous food on the menu. Sign up HERE for June 23rd.

June 30th ... NO CLUB MEETING. Enjoy the long weekend and Canada Day!

Stories
Career Education Council honours Rotary
Rotary was awarded "Sponsor of the Year" award at CEC's annual breakfast at the ICC on May 26, 2023. The theme of “Honouring Our Roots and Shaping Our Future” highlighted Rotary’s re-engagement with an organization that Rotary helped initiate in 1990.

On behalf of Rotary, President Designate Elect Brian Martin accepted the award.

Fifteen Rotarians were present as CEC celebrated being back in person to recognize the year’s achievements with students and sponsors.

Lots of conversation ensued as students networked with the sponsors and mentors in the room. CEC staff reviewed the various programs run throughout the year and were enthusiastic about record breaking attendance by Upper Grand and Wellington Catholic students. A highlight was the keynote speaker – Kate Parr – a JFRoss grad and former CEC student participant who spoke about the importance of mentoring as she pursued a career as a Millwright – one of only a few females in the profession in the province. Her talk brought into focus the important role that we as Rotarians, with our wide variety of professions and our call to do Vocational Service, can play in helping young people reach their own career goals.

Indigenous Youth Award presented by the Rotary Club of Guelph
May 11, 2023
The Rotary Club of Guelph has great pleasure in announcing Adison Evans as the winner of the 2023 Indigenous Youth Award. The Award Certificate was accompanied by a $500 prize from Rotary to help Adison further her education.

Adison is a Grade 11 student at John F Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute in Guelph. Adison has been exploring her Indigenous culture through arts, canoe building, learning Anishnaabemowin and Mohawk languages and leading a school club to offer support for Indigenous learning.

The Rotary Club of Guelph is proud to honour exceptional students such as Adison, and sincerely hopes she will continue her path of Indigenous Learning and perhaps one day become a Rotarian herself as she continues to live up to Rotary’s global motto of “Service Above Self”.

An insider view of RYLA
The 2023 Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) in our District had an extra-special participant in our youngest club member, Aiden Harris. Based on his great experience, Aidan is determined to champion RYLA in future and perhaps even volunteer as a RYLA facilitator as a way of giving back.

RYLA is an intensive training program that brings together young adults to further develop character and leadership skills and learn about Rotary. It is a four day residential program where participants are sponsored by different Rotary Clubs in our District.

Our Rotary Club of Guelph luckily had the perfect candidate in-house - our youngest member, Aidan Harris, who is a full time Master's student at UofG as well as being a full and active member of our club. Aidan jumped at the chance to be our candidate at this leadership development program.

When Aidan provided a full report-back to our club after attending RYLA, he said that of the 16 participants, at least 10 had little knowledge of Rotary beforehand, and he was the only participant (besides the organizers) who was actually a Rotarian already. He was therefore in a good position to both gain from and give back to this event.

"Most of the sponsored candidates already show some sort of leadership in their communities," added Aidan, "They are ideal candidates to become future Rotarians. That's why I think RYLA is a great opportunity for building the next generation of leaders, and I want to continue supporting it."

More memories of Jim Anderson
Our much loved Rotarian, Jim Anderson, who passed away on April 15, 2023 was warmly remembered by our club HERE and has been further recognized with a wonderful "Journeys" story in Guelph Today on May 18, 2023. Read it  HERE.

After family and community, Jim Anderson didn’t have ‘a second left’
In this edition of Journeys, we look at the life of Jim Anderson: volunteer, organizer, curler and dedicated Rotarian

by Richard Vivian -

Jim Anderson, who was involved in many community organizations, passed away last month.

Growing up on a farm in the Wingham area, Jim Anderson learned a lot about the importance of community involvement – something he brought with when he moved to Guelph and raised a family here.

Anderson, 89, passed away on April 15, surrounded by loved ones, following repeated bouts of pneumonia in addition to his lifelong struggle with diabetes.

“He was humble and a compassionate, giving kind of guy,” said his son, Jeff Anderson. “When you grow up on a farm, it’s all about community and I think that just transfers. His family was very giving as well.”

Jim first moved to Guelph to study at the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph, then returned to the city for good after earning an engineering degree at the University of Toronto.

He married Delvia, a Bell Canada operator, in 1958 and they had two children – son Jeff and daughter Marian. The couple was married for 65 years prior to Jim’s passing.

Jim spent much of his working life at Armtec, Jeff said, noting he was involved in building an airport in Cuba as well as the Guelph Curling Club, among many other projects.

He went on to serve as the club’s president and became a member for life.

“The curling club was huge to him. He curled right up until about a month before he died,” said Jeff.

In addition to being an active curler, Jim spent 31 years as a volunteer with the Guelph Rotary Club. Following his retirement in 2022, he was awarded an honorary lifetime membership.

“At our rotary club, Jim was an active volunteer throughout his years and led tree planting for many years as ‘Sunny’ Jim along with Larry ‘Red’ Kelly,” reads a statement posted to the club’s website. “May Jim's memory and example of service inspire us all!”

“I’ll bet he planted tens of thousands of trees in the Guelph area,” Jeff added.

Jim’s contributions to the community stretched deeper. He volunteered to drive patients to out of town hospitals, served on the city’s committee of adjustment, coached minor fastball, was active with Dublin United Church and was a founding member of Guelph SLO Pitch.

“He was a great ball player. He grew up playing ball,” said Jeff, who had his father for a coach during his early teenage baseball years.  “That’s what they grew up on in farm country, so he was quite good.”

Between his family life and community contributions, “there wasn’t a second left,” Jeff said of his father’s busy life. “He was totally involved in everything.”

A celebration of Jim’s life was held last weekend, which drew about 45 close family members.

“If we invited one (person outside the family), we would have had to invite thousands because he gave so much to everyone,” his son said. “It would have been just too much for my mother.”
