Largest Solar Project For Affordable Housing in Canadian History

It was a packed house at the Friday luncheon on October 13, 2023 with VIPs from our community and Rotarians from across the district to celebrate the launch of the largest solar project for affordable housing in Canadian history!  Making life more affordable for low income families and protecting the environment, this project is being hailed as a national example.

A committee lead by local Rotarians, Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington and dedicated community leaders will be planning, fundraising, and implementing a solar installation for Habitat for Humanity’s upcoming build on Speedvale Avenue E, that will bring 415,000 kWhrs/year onto the grid in Guelph, and represent an annual energy cost savings of $65,000 for the over 70 low income families who will live there.

Rotary in your Community

The Rotary Clubs of Guelph are serving the community in many ways. One of Rotary's proudest projects is almost ready to open its next doors.

If you've driven on Woolwich street between Speedvale and Woodlawn over the last few years, you would have noticed a large building being erected on the east side of the street. This building will house the next "GROVE" hub, hopefully opening prior to the new year.

The Grove Hubs centre youth in their own mental health and wellness story. For too long, the youth mental health system has been like trying to solve a puzzle without all the pieces.

The name is printed on the door - the reality is near.  Congratulations to all of the amazing Rotarians and partners who have been so instrumental in making this project happen.

Remembering John Brubacher
Rotarian for Life John A Brubacher passed away the morning of October 12th, 2023, peacefully in his sleep, at the Riverside Glen residence. He is survived by his wife Jean and family. A private family celebration of life is planned. Read more about John's Rotary service over his 46 years as a member of our club.
John Joined the Rotary Club of Guelph on November 30, 1973 and resigned, due to health reasons, on June 30, 2019.
Following his resignation and on the recommendation of the Award Committee The Board awarded John the designation Member For Life.

There was hardly a committee that John had not volunteered for or was appointed to by the President.

He was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Rotary years 1982-1983, 1983-1984, 1984-1985, 1985-1986, 1986-1987 and again in the Rotary Year 1997-1998.

In the Rotary Year 2003-2004 the Board appointed John club Insurance Advisor, a position he continued to hold until the end of the Rotary Year 2016-2017. John declined the position for the following year. John used the fine-tooth comb to review each annual insurance policy the District negotiated for all District Rotary Clubs. Annually each fund-raising committee consulted John on whether was the event adequately covered. Where John recommended additional coverage the committee requested he arrange for the insurance.

The many Rotary committees that John served on include:
  • Publicity
  • Skate-a-thon
  • Property
  • Futures 86
  • Sunshine
  • In 1979-1980, for the first year of the club's Lobsterfest fundraiser, the President appointed John as Chair of the Committee. The committee is still going strong and just held its very successful 43rd annual Lobsterfest on September 30, 2023
  • Bulletin, served as co-chair in 1979-80 and chair in 1981-82
  • Interclub, served as co-chair in 1978-79
  • Club music and singing was a most favourite topic for many years. Each regular Friday meeting when the meeting chair announced it was time for the sing-along, John would jump to his feet, head to the front of the room, encourage everyone to join in and sing along using the distributed song sheets he had prepared. Not satisfied that the singing went on well without accompaniment, John donated a piano to the club for the sing-alongs.
  • Fellowship, chair in 1978-1979
  • River Boat Gala, Chair in 1991 – 1992
