Remembering Dr. Ab Moore
Our dear friend and Rotary colleague, Ab Moore, passed away at hospice late on Sunday, June 25, 2023 in his 93rd year. A stalwart member of our club for 47 years, his expertise and thoughtful, consistent leadership will be greatly missed, especially his dedication to global projects. AB MOORE
February 2, 1931 - June 25, 2023
The family is saddened to announce the passing of George Albert Baker ‘Ab’ Moore B.A., B.Div., M.Sc., Ph.D. of Guelph Ontario. Ab passed peacefully on June 25th , 2023, at Hospice Wellington. He answered the Lord’s call to go and hold his family, friends and others in his heart and to watch over them.
Ab was predeceased by his parents, Mildred and George, brothers Burt and Bill, sister Mary, son Mark, and granddaughter Shannon. He will be greatly missed by Alice, his loving wife of 70 years; his daughter Mary (Michael), son Kent (Jane), daughter-in-law Lucie; grandchildren Ryan (Shelley), Andrew (Sophie), Tim (Meaghan); great-grandchildren Sawsha (Joel), Gabriella, Jessica, Michael, Domenic, Lucas, Riley, Olivia, Gemma and Grayson and great-great-grandson Ben.During Ab’s lifetime of service, he was Chair of the West Island School Commission in Montreal Quebec, Chair of the Guelph Children’s Aid Society and Chair of the Guelph United Way.
He was an active and proud Rotarian of 47 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He led Rotary International Foundation development initiatives in Cameroon. He also had international research and development activities in Ghana and Thailand. Ab was also a long-time active member of Dublin United Church in Guelph Ontario, where he was a choir member and served on many committees.
He was also a pilot, avid traveler, baker, visionary, planner, and self-trained handyman who always put family first. His commitment to those less fortunate made a difference in many lives.
He attended the University of Western Ontario and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. Subsequently, he attended Emanuel College of Victoria University in the University of Toronto, where he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree. He was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Canada, serving congregations in Scarborough Ontario, Kelleher Saskatchewan, Rockwood and Port Dover Ontario.
An early advocate of educational technology, his work with the United Church’s Berkley Studio led him to complete his M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees at Syracuse University. He then accepted academic appointments at Sir George Williams University in Montreal Quebec and The University of Guelph in Guelph Ontario. At the University of Guelph, he was the first Director of the Office of Educational Practice and, subsequently, Chair of the Department of Rural Extension Studies. Upon retirement, he was recognized for his contributions with the title Professor Emeritus.
Ab will be forever cherished by his family, friends and others whose lives he touched. The world is a better place as a result of his love, devotion and service.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice Wellington for the care that they provided to Ab in his last days. The loving environment was a great comfort to him and family.
